Puerto Rico Fishing Report: Capt. Omar Orraca Is Crushing The Tarpon On His Inshore ChartersPuerto Rico Fishing Report: The lagoons and estuaries surrounding San Juan are still seeing excellent tarpon fishing action as we enter the Spring weather pattern. This is the end of the big tarpon fishing season here in Puerto Rico, but Captain Omar Orraca of Caribbean Outfitters has continued to impress his customers day after day with incredible tarpon fishing in the San Juan area. Omar’s charter fishing operation produces more tarpon every year than most operations in Southwest Florida, an indicator that this is one of the best tarpon fisheries in the world. The big tarpon fishing in Puerto Rico will actually continue for about another month before they make room for other fish to invade the lagoons during Summer.

Puerto Rico Fishing Report: Capt. Omar Orraca Is Crushing The Tarpon On His Inshore ChartersThe preferred bait for these tarpon is fresh live baitfish cast netted at the beginning of the fishing charter, but many anglers also love to tempt these tarpon by fly fishing in Puerto Rico. There is nothing more exciting than watching a big tarpon take to the air after landing a perfect cast and presentation with your fly rod. It is one of the most rewarding moments in sport fishing.

The snook fishing remains excellent as well, with bragging sized linesiders being taken on nearly a daily basis with Capt. Omar on his inshore fishing charters in Puerto Rico. The San Juan area is known for supporting a healthy snook population in it’s lagoon system, particularly around mangrove areas and where there is tidal flow around structure. The snook have been falling victim to the same baits and flies as the tarpon, many times in the same areas as well.

The offshore Puerto Rico fishing report has been very good as well. Mahi Mahi and sailfish are the two main targets for the deep sea fishing charter boats, but the occasional wahoo has been taken as well. This weeks full moon will certainly trigger an end of the season wahoo bite for those anglers looking to get out there before the action slows down.
