South Florida Fishing Report: The biggest news this week has been the exceptional wahoo fishing that is taking place a couple miles offshore the South Florida coastline. August is typically the month when the biggest wahoo of the year show up to wreak havoc on baitfish outside of the reef ledges in 100-400 ft of water. Most of the reports coming in are from live bait fishing boats, but these big wahoo also respond well to large lures trolled in the same spots. The best live baits for monster wahoo in August include speedos, tinker mackerel, goggle eyes, pilchards, and bullet bonitos. The bigger the bait, the bigger the wahoo. Titanium wire leaders are the best option to prevent cutoffs from the razor sharp teeth of the wahoo, but #7 stainless wire will also do the job just fine. There are plenty of wahoo fishing charter boats out there that consistently produce fish, but we recommend fishing withCaptain Art Sapp of “Native Son” Charters for the best chance at a monster wahoo.
